A country is red when there is sustained armed fighting on its soil or its forces are in combat, whether against another country, rebels, insurgents or armed criminal groups. “War” marks large-scale fighting (roughly 1,000 or more deaths a year, the common research threshold); the rest are smaller but ongoing. The list is reviewed every day against these research trackers and the news sources on the left, and each review is dated.
Please note: this tracker is updated once a day by an automated review of the sources above (last on October 26, 2026) and is not real-time. Definitions of “war” and “armed conflict” vary, borders shown are approximate, and very small or local outbreaks may not appear. Being red is not a judgement about any side. Before you travel, always check your government’s official travel advice.
